Surf Life Saving Canterbury
Canterbury's busiest beaches are patrolled by Volunteer Surf Lifeguards during the Summer Season. There are also patrols and call-out rescue services on the West Coast, Marlborough and Nelson. The patrolling season generally operates from mid November to mid March covering weekends and public holidays. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in New Zealand from ages 1 to 34 (NHIS Ministry of Health Mortality and Demographic Data 1994-1998). Surf Lifeguards strive to prevent death by drowning by proactive patrolling techniques which include ‘preventative actions’ (preventing a potential life threatening situation) and saving lives through rescues. As well as Rescues and Preventative Actions, Lifeguards are also called upon for medical emergencies / first aids, search and rescue operations and after hour call outs that occur in their area. All Surf Lifesaving Clubs provide surf patrols on their beaches. For more information on Surf life saving Canterbury go to their website at www.surfcanterbury.org.nz
South Brighton lifeguards

All Lifeguards at South Brighton beach on patrol are qualified lifeguards having passed their Bronze medallion award, most have also choosen to do a senior lifeguard course teaching the lifeguards more advanced skills for patolling local beaches.

Our Lifeguards also know the beach and surrounding areas very well, so are experts in knowing the local surf conditions. All lifeguards dediacte their own time in the weekends during summer to make the beach a much safer enviroment for you, your family and the general public.

South Brighton Beach

South Brighton beach is a small beach on a very long coastline in the Pegasus bay area, It is probably not one of the busiest beaches in canterbury, but is one of the safest. Our patrol area is usually set up on the beach in front of the clubhouse between the Red and Yellow Flags indicating the safest swimming area that is patrolled by Lifeguards.

We encourage people to swim between the flags it is dedicated as a safe zone and makes the lifeguards role much easier. Due to the vast area of beach and surf along the coastline not patrolled by lifeguards with hazards like holes and rips, we strongly advise for your safety to swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags.

For South Brighton's patrol hours and dates that patrols run from and too, see  patrol hours box at top of page.
